Mary tells Markham she was trying to find him last night. Mrs Towne, Mrs. Wilcox and i were at Bolton Hall and they wanted him there. Ella and Mrs. Towne wre invited to the Poets Dinner and they are going. She would like Markham to extend an invitation to her and she will bare the expense. She would like to come to his home tonight. She is hoping he can come to lunch with her.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
